Health 2 Know - October 2006

If you are not careful, as you age, bad habits such as slouching and the lack of exercise will lead to poor posture. The complication of poor posture includes back pain, spinal dysfunction, joint degeneration, rounded shoulders and potbelly. You can improve your posture and spinal health by keeping your three natural back curves in balanced alignment.

Keep your weight down:
Excess weight exerts a constant forward pull on the back muscles and stretches and weakens muscles in the abdomen.

Avoid staying in one position for long period of time:
Inactivity causes muscle tension and weakness.

Firm mattress and good pillow:
Sleep on a firm mattress and use a pillow under your head just big enough to maintain the normal cervical-neck-curve. Avoid using oversized pillows or several pillows.

Exercise regularly:
Exercise promotes strong and flexible muscles that keep you upright in a proper postural position.

Protect your back by using good body mechanics:
Bend your knees when picking something up or putting it down. Carry a heavy object by using two hands and keeping the load close to your waist.

Wear comfortable and well-supported shoes:
Avoid continuous use of high heeled or platform shoes, which distort the normal shape of the foot and throw the back natural curves out of alignment.

Walk in good posture:
Keep head erect with chin parallel to the ground. Allow arms to swing naturally, and keep feet pointed to the direction you are going.

Q: I am always in pain when having sex with my boyfriend and there is the feeling of going to the toilet to pee. Halfway during sex, we have to stop. Even if I pee before sex, it is still the same.

October 21st 2006 00:00
It is very common to think that high consumption of diary or high-calcium products such as milk, cheese and yogurt will reduce the risk of developing osteoporosis. However, a recent study showed that milk consumption and high calcium diets were not associated with a lower risk of osteoporosis – related hip fracture.

So, what is?

The flavour of fresh beetroot is deliciously refreshing and lifts this soup out of the ordinary. However you can use an 810g can of sliced beetroot. Using a food processor to grate beetroot and chop apple and vegetables saves time. Serve this soup hot or chilled.

Contains approximately 4 portions

And then, it struck me when one of my close friends invited me over for dinner and she cooled beetroot soup and kept telling me to have more because it’s good for health.

Causes and Symptoms of Kidney Stones

October 6th 2006 04:00
What Causes Kidney Stones?
The development of the stones is related to decreased urine volume or increased excretion of stone-forming components such as calcium, oxalate, urate, cystine, xanthine, and phosphate. The stones form in the urine collecting area (the pelvis) of the kidney and may range in size from tiny to staghorn stones the size of the renal pelvis itself.

Introduction
Recently I was looking into my old emails (as I need to clear them anyway) I saw this interesting article that my friend sent to me. Many people, especially children these days, don’t like to drink water and this will cause kidney stones. I remembered when I was 10 I had the similar problem but since it was an early stage I get to clear it out of my system. Now I do my best to drink water regularly and remind myself the pain I went through when I was a kid… it was so bad that I had to lie down and couldn’t move. That was how painful it was.
