Health 2 Know - November 2006

Well…. Except that the amount of food you typically get at a restaurant is crazy big… (talking out Outback, TGIF, McDonalds…) “If you eat just 75 percent of what is in front of you, you are still might be getting too much,” says Tara Gidius, R.D. But the worse is yet to come – the more there is (on our plates), the more we eat – even when the food isn’t appealing.

In a recent study from the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behaviour, researchers gave moviegoers either a medium or large container of popcorn. Some got fresh popcorn; the others got funky, 2-week old popcorn. Not surprisingly, those with the fresh popcorn ate 45 percent more than they had large tubs. But even those with the nasty popcorn ate about as third more…. Why? Because it was there.

So how do you overcome this?

Play mind games
Get used to thinking of your Chinese (or any other meals from restaurant) takeout has two meals, not one, and refrigerate half the moo shoo pork before you even start eating.

And when you play chef, serve up your masterpiece in small plates; less food will look like more, and you’ll have the satisfaction of scraping your plate.

The Laws of Dieting Success: Just Eat

November 27th 2006 09:18
Ah! The modern urban life… while we tend to expect that our computers can do a lot of work for us, such as processing that daily administrative work, we expect our PCs could play music or even download files at the same time.

Yet, daily we are also being expected by superiors that we can do the same as our PCs do – multi-tasking. And because of the multitasking insanity of our lives, the market creates a culture of conveniences. You can eat while you do your work, on the go; you name it – from snack chips to even soup – packed in containers that fit neatly into car cup holders

Now most of us always like the in-between meals. But the norms should be careful of what it is to offer.

Although roughly 10% of the calories you eat are used to fuel digestion, and because of that, many believed that eating more often seems like a brilliant way to keep your metabolism going strong – which has come to the fact that it becomes a popular choice of nutrition expert to advice you to have six small meals during the day instead of 3 large ones

Hate the veggies? Disgust with fibre? You have better think it again.

It may not be glamorous, but fibre is a dieter’s best friend. Foods rich in water and fibre are bulkier, but less caloric

Recently I was down with flu and viral fever, and when I came across this recipe I thought, “well no harm trying…” Though I was rather down but I was still able to cook out with the help of my housemates getting some of the ingredients and my all-time favourite slow cooker (I did it in a different way). It turned out pretty good and I didn’t have the usual strength less feeling.

Well, besides flu-busting, I believe it is also great for a normal dish when you want to feel full but still maintain a pretty good calorie count. So here is the original recipe I found below

Recipe: Stewed Ham and Lentils

November 21st 2006 10:30
I am not quite sure how much calories carried in this dish, but to look into the recipe of olive oil, and a good combination of meat and leafy green plus vegetables, I rate it as quite a healthy food to be recommended in the Woman's Weekly issue.

When it comes to carbo and fat, you sometimes do need to know what sort of fat that you are taking everyday. Everyone's been arguing that what sort of fat should be taken and what should be avoided, a good example would be between magarine and butter, those who are not taking animal fat would probably avoid butter but is magarine (some says vegetable magarine) be good? Lets check out the article I fould below:

Working out is essential to fitness and feeling good, as you will need to pump up yourself if you still want to stay healthy and active when you reach your golden age years. Yet exercising vigorously isn’t the highway to fat loss as the makers of Tae Bo would have you believe.

A study of military personnel who upped their exercise over a 3-year period found that they actually gained weight. How did this happen? Simple. They ate more than they burned off

When you think you are just another step away to slim down a little for that party next month, you go for a quick crash diet through fasting. The fact is, you might be doing all wrong and not only you are not loosing weight, you might actually gain more.

A free site to track your calories

November 14th 2006 00:52
When I was trying to check on some Asian food's calories I came across this site through SearchMash (the supposingly new Google search) and curious as I am (always), I popped by to check out what it has to offer.

The Calorie Counter Database is a free online tracking diet program that allows members to key in what food they took and what exercise (or activity) they did in order to keep track of their calorie intake and calorie burnt

What do you first think to cut it out from your daily intake whenever you thought about dieting? In research most men and women who wanted to start dieting would have carbs and fat scrapped out from their list. In the Malaysian way they would have said, “no more nasi lemak (pandan rice) and roti canai (Indian bread) for me…”

And other famous programs such as Atkins, South Beach and other low-carb dieting plans apply such concept and no doubt that it has allowed many of us to feel the thrill of slipping into slim or body hugging clothing. Yet not everyone achieved that, because those diets worked for one simple reason: We ate less

“Ah! The beautiful celebrities… how on earth did they get to look so good?” These would be a common question among girls these days whenever they see their idol celebrity’s face on billboard posters or from their favourite series. Hack, even the guys have that tiny dream of looking good for the girls (and for themselves) whenever they look themselves at the mirror and remembered those tough characters they’ve seen from movies or advertisements. (Hey, guys wanna look good too)

Gout, one of the main suffering of many in this new century has been pretty much a distress for everyone, yet ironically the health industry make use of this opportunity to earn an extra cash for many sufferers. But has anyone truly thought that prevention is better than cure?
