Health 2 Know - March 2007

Knowing your tea

March 31st 2007 00:56

This is quite an interesting article I found when I was clicking google ads. It's good to know what sort of tea that you are taking and what are the effects towards our health.

Promoting Green Tea

Tea, especially green tea has long been known for its medicinal benefits. It helps digestion, boost metabolism and even wards off cancer and heart disease.

According to whether it is fermented or not, tea can be divided into 3 types:
green tea - not fermented
oolong tea - partially fermented
black tea - fermented

While people may prefer black tea or oolong tea, green tea has more healthy benefits. As it's dried straight after picking, it keeps most of its valuable polyphenols while its cousins - black tea and oolong tea lose most of theirs in the process of fermentation. Green tea has a lot more polyphenols than black tea or oolong tea. What's the deal of those polyphenols things, you may wonder? They are known as powerful antioxidants, which remove free radicals from the body. Free radicals in the body's cells are very bad. They very unstable and tend to react negatively with other important molecules like DNA, causing malfunctions and injury on the cellular level. They produce destruction that may therefore pave the way for diseases like heart disease and cancer. Green tea contains rich polyphenols that play an active role in removing the free radicals from the body. Antioxidants in tea are also known to prevent death from second heart attack by helping blood vessels relax, thus blood can flow through more easily. As a result, that can help lower blood pressure and reduce stress on the heart. Studies show green tea drinkers have 50% lower risk of developing stomach or esophageal compared to non green tea drinkers.

One final benefit of green tea drinking can help lose some weight. It's believed some of its polyphenols and caffeine work together to boost the body's metabolism, thus boost our energy burning system.

How much tea shall we drink? Generally, three to five cups a day is fairly enough for us to get its medical benefits.

Would you skip a meal for a child?

March 30th 2007 05:07

Today I received an email from my cousin, who is a strong supporter for the World Vision in Malaysia. She adopted a child from China and has been supporting some of her financial needs so that she can at least leave a healthy life and go to normal schools.

The previous posts are all about primary antioxidants. Now we will look into the secondary antioxidants as they are very important simply because the primary antioxidants may not be sufficient to help fight against all free radicals produced, especially as we age. The body also needs to depend on dietary source (secondary antioxidants) for support.

However it may difficult to obtain enough antioxidants from diet to cope with all the free radicals generated. One could look at supplements to fill the gaps such as vitamins A, C and E; antioxidant support minerals (selenium, zinc, copper and manganese); other substance such as polyphenols (found in grapes and green tea) and OPC (Oligomeric Proanthocyanidins – found in grape seed extract) is also a good source

Knowing Antioxidants: Catalase

March 29th 2007 00:28
Catalase is another important antioxidant enzyme made by the body. Catalase as mentioned above converts hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen. Hydrogen peroxide can contribute to inflammation and arthritis. Studies found that taking SOD bounded with gliadin supplement not only rased levels of SOD by 89% in mice but also increase the blood levels of Catalase by almost 3 times.

ALA has been described as an ideal antioxidant as it is the only antioxidant that is water as well as fat-soluble. It is one of the rare nutrients capable of crossing the blood-brain-barrier and is able to protect the brain against free radical attack.

It improves insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism and is recommended for diabetics. ALA also protect your eyes against both oxidative stress and glycation (sugar damage) of your cells

Glutathione is naturally produced in the body and is found in high concentrations in liver cells. Glutathione protects cells by neutralising hydrogen peroxide and also hydroxyl radicals.

Glutathione plays roles in the synthesis and repair of DNA, in boosting of immune system and slowing of natural aging process

SOD plays the primary roles of transforming the most reactive, and therefore the most dangerous, free radicals – the superoxide radicals – into hydrogen peroxide, a less harmful oxygen-based free radical.

You can say they are the elite team that has to tackle the most vicious criminals in your body

Getting To Know: Antioxidants

March 26th 2007 01:13
Previously we were talking about how harmful free radicals can be in our body, so how do we counter it? That’s where antioxidants come into play. They are the ones that fight against the free radicals and their detrimental effects on health and aging.

Antioxidants are divided into Primary antioxidants that are always present and Secondary antioxidants that help support Primary antioxidants

Getting to know: Free radicals

March 14th 2007 06:17
The word "Free Radicals" seemed to be a hype world these days in the health era, and many may just nod their heads and agree or "oh!" in a horrid look as if they know, and many are still in limbo trying to figure out what is it, although in general you all might know that it is harmful.

So, what are free radicals anyway
