The Top 10 Brain Damaging Habits

October 19th 2007 07:22

I remembered I once wrote about how we could retain our IQ with the natural herb Ginseng, but I can’t remember whether I have wrote about the damaging habits that could “fry” or “shrink” your brain? Em…. Where was I? Oh yes…. Sucks… I have memory laps here…

1. No breakfast

In my previous post I did mention that unfit people that have poorly regulated sugar levels could cause part of the brain that controls memory to shrink. And where does breakfast comes in?
People who do not take breakfast are going to have a lower blood sugar level.
This leads to an insufficient supply of nutrients to the brain causing brain degeneration.

Now I am saying low blood sugar level doesn’t mean you should have lollies and sweets for breakfast. Try healthy sugar source like fruits and milk that can help you to start your engine with fewer blackouts in the day (especially for anaemic individuals – mind you, I’m anaemic)

2. Overeating
We talked about the importance of food intake especially breakfast but that doesn’t mean we should start stuffing tons of food into our throat and fill our bellies. Overeating can cause hardening of the brain arteries, leading to decrease in mental power.

So if you start noticing that you feel sleepy after a hearty breakfast of coconut milk rice (for example) you should start adjusting to a lighter portion. Like Lauren-D the Travel Not Tour Orbler once reminded us, ‘All things in moderation, especially moderation.' – by Oscar Wilde

3. Smoking
Smokers out there beware – although some said that 2nd hand smoke is worst than the first for lung cancer – thus having the excuse to smoke – bare in mind that smoking causes multiple brain shrinkage and may lead to Alzheimer disease.

4. High Sugar Consumption
Another thing that relates something about blood sugar level, like I pointed out earlier, taking loads of lollies and sweets will not help you. In fact, too much sugar will interrupt the absorption of proteins and nutrients causing malnutrition and may interfere with brain development.

So watch the cubes of sugar you put in your coffee / tea and for those who have a sweet- tooth (like me) would need to resolve to natural sugar source, which are fruits and vegetables.

5. Air Pollution
Like the Enviro Warrior Lilla kept reminding us, air pollution is truly harmful not only to nature and to every living creature, but to look in to our healthy brain wise, is deadly because our brain is the largest oxygen consumer in our body. Inhaling polluted air decreases the supply of oxygen to the brain, bringing about a decrease in brain efficiency.

So for the sake of our brains, it’s good to go-green and promote-green.

6. Sleep Deprivation
Sleep allows our brain to rest. Long term deprivation from sleep will accelerate the death of brain cells. So look out for those who suffers insomnia will need to look into this to overcome the sleeping disorder problem.

I know that one of the ways that does help my friend who has constant insomnia (due to work stress) is to have a traditional massage with essential oils. That helped her a lot and I hope such method could help someone out there too.

7. Head covered while sleeping
I know there are a lot of people who has this habit while they are sleeping, especially those who sleep with their lights turned on…

Sleeping with the head covered increases the concentration of carbon dioxide and decrease concentration of oxygen that may lead to brain damaging effects.

8. Working your brain during illness
When the doctor asks you to rest at home, remember to listen to his / her advice. This is because when you are sick, your body is working hard to recuperate itself and when you use the energy to focus in your work / studies this may lead to a decrease in effectiveness of the brain as well as damage the brain.

9. Lacking in stimulating thoughtst
Brainstorming is actually a good exercise. It helps to make you focus and trains your thoughts to be sharper, and when you lack of such brain exercises you tend to expose your brain to possible shrinking.

10. Talking rarely
Now this I can testify myself. Orblers and writers out there, whoever types more than they speak… this can be very crucial as I myself, an Orbler and a programmer do not speak much and lately I started to realise I have trouble forming sentences to speak out, yet still able to type fluent English on my MS Word application.

Intellectual conversations will promote the efficiency of the brain; so interacting with people through conversations is good to keep your mind sharp. For me, trying to read my Bible out loud is one of my training to get my speech back on track lately and it does help, so do those who loves to read bedtime stories to love ones.
