Vision Care is Essential to Everyone!

December 31st 2008 19:48
Eyes, where it also referred as "the window to the soul," are one of the most important parts of our main organs. Honestly, can you ever imagine the life of the blind people? I've seen this unfortunate people before, and I guarantee that you won't even want to try it, as the world of extremely black/dark is very misery indeed...

Due to the advancement of technology, many people in nowadays have been awarded a gift, eyeglasses! According to the research, 1 out of 3 people has been diagnosed with the short-sightedness or Myopia, and this is mainly happening to children. Well, the scientists discovered that those children that wearing glasses were mostly spending their time watching TV programmes in a very near distance, where less than 5 meters.

The short-sightedness or myopia won't have any impact in the very beginning to the person, but when the times going on, the person eyeball become longer and the cornea is becoming too curved than before. Hence, all the images that supposed to be focused on the retina, has only focuses in front of the retina! When this happened, the person's vision will become blur and unclear as the normal person that has perfect vision.

At this point, you don't have many choices. If you're too afraid to undergo the LASIK surgery, (Ok, I admitted that I'm one of the people that scared of the surgery! lol) then you can either choose to wear glasses or contact lenses. Different types of people have different kind of favor. Some of you might have the thought that contact lenses are more comfortable than the glasses, while others will think that the glasses is somehow cooler and stylish than the contact lenses.

I have both the contact lenses and eyeglasses, where I always wearing my glasses to the workplace (high school), as I think that teacher is much better to have a glasses hanging on their face! When I'm out for leisure or entertainment, I mostly put on my contact lenses.

No matter what you're choice is, you should take care of your eyes, as once you've spoiled your cornea, then you'll never get it back...

When people first hear about the Mayo Clinic Diet, they will mostly have some bad thoughts on it, as some of them might have heard that it's a method that being used on cardiac wards for patients that want to have weight loss quickly.

Well, same with you all, I used to have a wrong impression about the Mayo Clinic Diet because I heard that some said it can cause heart problems if we're practicing this method. For your information, you know that I'm the type of person that always want to find out the truth that hidden behind the myth and I won't give up easily.

After years of investigation and observation, I found out that Mayo Clinic Diet is not what as the experts claimed, where it is a healthy lifestyle program can help you to maintain your ideal weight in your daily life.

What is special about the Mayo Clinic Diet is it based on a food pyramid that helps the consumers to choose the right amount of serving for every food group. It recommends that there is not any limit for the amounts of vegetables and fruits consumption, but you must be not consuming up to 75 calories of sweets per day.

This Mayo Clinic Diet is best to reduce the risk of cancer and type two diabetes. Even you're already a type two diabetic, you can still practice this Mayo Clinic Diet as well.

Below here is one of my sample meal plans of Mayo Clinic Diet:

Breakfast: 1 bowl of oatmeal/bran cereal and 1 cup of herbal tea
Lunch: Broccoli/Cauliflower salad, 1 apple and a glass of plain water
Dinner: Cod with lemon and capers, 1 cup steamed green beans and a glass of water

Note: I’m a type 2 diabetic as well, and the above is a 1,200 – 1,500 calorie meal plan, where it’s an idea meal plan for the type 2 diabetic!

As you can see, the above three main daily meals are mainly concentrated on vegetables and fruits, where it’s good for all people that want to have a healthier lifestyle!

Diabetes, as one of the top ten killers, has been spreading like wild fire all across the world. Do you know that there are over 246 million people in the world are currently living with the Diabetes?

According to the reliable survey, diabetes causes 6 deaths every minute and one in 20 deaths in the world is due to Diabetes! Every year, there are more than 3 million people in the world die and it’s mainly causing by the diabetes.

Diabetes is known as the number one silent killer disease, as it usually doesn’t have any early symptom of the disease. If you want me to point out the commonest early symptom, it would be feeling extremely thirsty.

There are three common types of diabetes, which as:

Type 1 Diabetes:
This Type 1 diabetes also known as “Juvenile diabetes” and the diabetics will need the help from insulin treatment, as their pancreas failed to produce insulin.

Type 2 Diabetes: This Type 2
Some called it “non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus” is a metabolic disorder that is characterized by high blood glucose in the context of insulin resistance and relative insulin deficiency.

Gestational Diabetes
This type of diabetes is a condition, where the women have been diagnosed diabetes exhibit high blood glucose levels during pregnancy. The good thing is, it’s only for temporary and it will disappear, after the baby is born.

No matter what types of diabetes you’ve been diagnosed, you should learn to control the high blood glucose level. With the good diabetic diet plan, adequate exercise and medicine control, you can have a normal life like others did! (You should believe all the statements, as these words are coming from a Type 2 Diabetic, Me!)

As a diabetic, I would suggest you to intake all those wholesome bread, fruits and vegetables. For your information, the oatmeal has been proven effective to control the high blood glucose level. Hence, I’ve included the oatmeal as my main breakfast meal. For your information, I also have my very own favorite diabetic recipes, such as the Lemon lime chicken, asparagus vinaigrette and oatmeal cookie! (Isn’t these recipes started to make you mouth watering here?)

Honestly, having diabetic is not the end of the world. It just your own fear of it, you just need to learn how to overcome it. Face it bravely or you’ll be suffered from it!

Yummy Holiday Apple Plum Pie Recipe

December 24th 2008 09:04

Recipe extracted from Cancer Project
Image extracted from post-gazette.com

In occasion of Christmas, I have dug out this neat recipe that I have received... Even a hearty serving of this healthy pie is lower in fat than a typical slice, and it’s loaded with nutritious fiber. Enjoy it with your whole family this holiday season!

Holiday Apple Plum Pie Makes 8 servings

Ingredients:
9-inch Crust (or use 1 9-inch premade, whole wheat pie crust):
1 1/2 cups whole-wheat or spelt pastry flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
4 teaspoons canola or vegetable oil
1/4 cup 1 tablespoon cold, nondairy milk, divided
1 tablespoon water, or as needed to moisten crust

Filling:
3 Granny Smith or tart apples, cored and thinly sliced
15-17 small red plums, pitted and sliced (about 2 1/4 pounds plums with pits)
1/2 cup 1/2 tablespoon evaporated cane juice, divided
1/4 cup light brown sugar
1/4 cup agave nectar
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1 1/2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
3 tablespoons apricot conserves or preserves
1 tablespoon water

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 F.

For the crust, combine flour and salt in a mixing bowl. Cut in oil and nondairy milk with a fork until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Sprinkle with additional water as needed, tossing gently to lightly moisten.

Quickly form the dough into a ball, touching it as little as possible to prevent it from getting too warm. Place it between two sheets of wax paper (or plastic wrap will do), and roll into a circle about 1 inch larger than a 9-inch pie plate. If the dough is crumbly around the edges, sprinkle it with additional drops of water to moisten and reroll those portions. Remove the top sheet of wax paper and gently flip the crust over into the pie plate. Carefully remove the other sheet of paper. Press the crust into the pie plate and trim or flute edges as desired. Prick the sides and bottom of the crust with a fork to prevent air bubbles from forming underneath. Brush the crust edge with vanilla nondairy milk and then sprinkle it with remaining 1/2 tablespoon evaporated cane juice.

For the filling, place all filling ingredients, except apricot conserves and water, in a medium saucepan on medium-high heat. Cook and stir filling for 5 to 7 minutes, or until juices just begin to thicken and filling just begins to bubble. If time permits, pour 2/3 of the filling into the crust, then arrange the remaining 1/3 of the filling in a decorative pattern. Otherwise, simply pour the filling into the prepared crust. Bake for about 50 minutes, or until filling thickens and bubbles. Allow bubbling to occur for at least 3 minutes. If necessary, cover the pie crust with foil to prevent over-browning. Remove from oven and cool until at least room temperature.

Heat together apricot conserves and water. Mix well. Brush the top of the filling with the conserves and serve.

The Untold Benefits of the Carrot!

December 23rd 2008 07:58
Do you know that carrots are an excellent source of antioxidant compounds, and the richest vegetable source of the pro-vitamin A carotenes?

The carrots' antioxidant compounds will help protect against cardiovascular disease and cancer and also promote good vision, especially night vision.

The Beta-carotene helps to protect vision, especially night vision. After beta-carotene is converted to vitamin A in the liver, it travels to the retina where it is transformed into rhodopsin, a purple pigment that is necessary for night-vision. (If you want to avoid the night blindness, then you should consume more carrots!)

Beta-carotene's powerful antioxidant actions help provide protection against macular degeneration and the development of senile cataracts, the leading cause of blindness in the elderly.

PS: Now, you know why the rabbits didn't have any night blindness! lol

After several centuries of research and study by many experts in the field of phobias, it has finally led to several new developments and those interesting facts about phobias are:

• There are diagnostic criteria for three clinical categories of phobia.
• The various categories of phobia and individual phobias have different causes and reasons for their development, in either aetiology or aetiological mechanism!
• Cognitive factors have to be known playing the important role in the development and continuance of phobias!

• Phobias are not totally unconscious, as in some cases, and to differing extents, it will reinforce by a person’s perceptions and beliefs about the surrounding environment and the phobia stimulus.
• Recognition of the interplay of different mechanisms and cognitive factors in the development of phobias has challenged earlier and more simplistic theories about their origins!
• More helpful specific treatment programmes has been provided to individual that needs and have proved to be highly successful in most cases.

The recent developments are still in progression and hopefully, there will be more new facts to be discovered in the near future…

Candy Cane recipe

December 19th 2008 03:22
Christmas is around the corner again, and I'd like to push up my old recipe for those who missed out this interesting recipe that can be a wonderful activity for family members and love ones to participate. ^_^

Original post: December 18th 2007 10:09

Enjoy!
* * * * *

In Daily History site I have mentioned about the history of Candy Cane, and many would have wondered how it can be made. Well I found a neat website for teachers that gives out the recipes to teach the kids how to make them.

Candy Cane Recipe

This is a great project to do with children.

1 cup sugar
1/4 cup light corn syrup
1/4 cup water
1/8 tsp. cream of tartar
4 drops oil of peppermint or other flavoring
4 drops red or green food coloring

Grease a hard surface.

Simmer the sugar with the corn syrup, water and cream of tartar until the mix reaches a soft crack stage or about 280 degrees on a candy thermometer. Remove from the heat and add the flavouring.

Divide the syrup in half. Add food colouring to one half; pour out separately onto the greased surfaces. Cool for 1 to 2 minutes. Pull each half separately; roll into 1/2" thick ropes. Twist coloured batch around the white batch pulling until the colours adhere. Cut with scissors into 6" long lengths; bend to crook one end.

NOTE: You can find Wintergreen or oil of cinnamon to use as a flavouring. Work quickly to form candy canes or you can form knots.

Most of the people in present days will have at least bought one or more health insurance plans and it's a very common phenomenon. For proving it, I've done a simple survey with my friends and colleagues. Guess what, 18 out of 20 people have bought at least one health insurance and 9 out of the 18 people have purchased more than three medical insurance plans!

Well, it might sound a little bit crazy, but this is the truth where the health insurance is started to getting its position in our daily life. By the way, do you know that Hugh the Elder Chmberlen proposed the earliest concept of health insurance in 1694? The first health insurance that being insured is the "accident insurance," where it was first offered in the United States by the Franklin Health Assurance Company of Massachusetts. The firm that founded in 1850 was offered insurance against injuries due to the railroad and steamboat accidents!

Before the invention of medical insurance plans, most of the patients have to pay all the health care costs out of their own wallets and it's really a big burden for those that can't afford to pay it at once. Luckily, the medical insurance was introduced during the 1920s, where the hospitals started to offer the patients on a pre-paid basis.

If you haven’t bought any medical insurance plans yet, then you should consider doing it as soon as possible, as we cannot predict what will happen to us in the next minute…

Today is the third chapter and I would like to discuss the history of phobia and the influences of phobia in the past…

No matter what races you’re, you cannot hide or runaway from the phobias, as it seems to be appeared in all races and cultures. They have been mentioned in early historical writings, particularly in those of Greeks and Romans’ ancient masterpieces.

For your information, allusions are being made to phobias in later European writings but when it’s come to the Middle Ages, they were often regarded as manifestations of demonic activity (Yep, you didn’t read it wrongly, it always being considered as a “Demonic activity” in the Middle Ages!)

Although some phobias have always occurred, such as animal phobias and height phobias, and others specific diseases or illnesses such as plague, syphilis and rabies, were once more common. These diseases were major killers in the past, and most of the people were afraid of them.

Let’s take an example, the Black Death, which is famous for one of the deadliest pandemics in human history, which has been reaped away at least 75 million people in 1400, has become one of the dread phobias to general population that living in the era!

In the 18th and 19th centuries, disorders of mind were once more returned to the realms of medicine and science. Many science researches and attempts were made to study and explain the nature and development of phobias and the best ways to treat it! Although there are several misconceptions were born at this time but it’s continuing in-depth study of phobias throughout the 20th century and until nowadays…

It has been too long that I have not written anything here because of work loads and family issues... so, to start it off today, I'd like to share a precaution general knowledge that everyone should know, since the holiday season's near and many might travel home via driving.

Static electricity in Petrol Stations
Article extracted from a forward mail shared by my friend

As a continuation of the video about static electricity in which a girl had a fire accident on getting out of her car and directly touching the nose-piece, we come across a similar case:

Car melted
Rear Car melted from sparked flames

With the generalisation of self-service facilities in petrol stations people should be warned about the outbreak of fires resulting from static electricity while they are pouring in petrol.
150 cases of this type of fire have been investigated and the results were very surprising.

1- Of the 150 cases, more happened to women than men, due to their habit of getting in and out of the vehicle while the petrol is being poured in.
2- In the majority of cases the people had re-entered their cars when the hose was still pouring petrol out (the danger of the triggers on the nosepieces). When they finished refuelling and got out to remove the hose pistol the fire began, as a result of the static electricity.
3- The majority of those affected used rubber-soled footwear and clothes of synthetic fibres.
4- Never use mobile phones when filling up with fuel.
5- It is well known that it is the vapour that comes from the petrol that burns and causes the fire when it makes contact with static charges.
6- In twenty-nine of the cases analysed, the people re-entered their vehicles and later touched the pistols during the petrol fuelling process. This happened in cars of different varieties of makes and models.
7- Seventeen fires occurred before, during or immediately after the cap of the petrol tank was removed and before starting to fill up with petrol.
8- The static charge often results from when a passenger rubs their clothes against the upholstery of the seats on getting in or out of the vehicle. To avoid this, it is recommendable that NOBODY gets in or out of the vehicle while the petrol is being poured in. Movement in or out should only be done BEFORE starting, or when the fuelling is finished and the petrol cap placed.
9- MAXIMISE THE PRECAUTIONS if the petrol has spilt or splashed onto the ground. Highly inflammable vapours are immediately produced which can be ignited by sparks of static electricity from the turning on of electronic equipment (mobile phones, remote controls, etc.) or by the ignition of the vehicle itself. BEFORE starting up the engine again, the spilt petrol must be gathered or neutralised by the petrol station staff.

LOADING PETROL

IN YOUR VEHICLE:
Stop, put the handbrake on and turn off the engine, radio and lights

NEVER:
Never return to your vehicle while you are pouring in fuel.

AS A PRECAUTION:
Get used to closing the car door on getting out or into the vehicle and in this way the static electricity will be discharged on touching something metallic.
After closing the door TOUCH THE METAL PART OF THE BODYWORK before touching the petrol pump pistol. By doing this the static electricity in your body will be discharged on the metal and not on the pistol.

RESPECT THE SAFETY REGULATIONS

As mentioned, we undertake this as a daily task, both inside and outside the company. The following bulletin aims to raise public awareness of this danger.

I ask you to share this information to ALL your friends and family, especially those carrying children in the cars when pouring in petrol. Thank you for passing on this information.

Honestly, the medical costs are increasing at a tremendously fast speed and most of us cannot even scoop with the skyrocketing medical bills, especially in this economy crisis!
No matter what, we all still need some medical care in certain level.

Ok, there are some great ways to help you reduce the amount of the medical bills:

First and foremost, never ever tried to skip the annual physical check-ups with a doctor. This method is ensures that your body is always situated in the finest and healthiest shape. And, if you're having checked up to have some diseases, you still can spot it and cure/prevent it earlier!

Secondly, you should always double check the medical bills, as some doctors will mess up with the medical bills accidentally. If you've found out that there is a mistake for the medical bills, you should call the hospital bill assistance and tell them to fix it for you here!

Thirdly, if you've spent over the limit for the medical bills, then you can be eligible for the tax reduction. Remember to list down all the medical expenses in your tax form and don't forget to include the proofs as well!

Lastly, if you think that you’re really cannot afford the expensive medical bills, then you can go for a negotiation. Instead, by negotiate medical bills by yourself, it’s better to find someone that specializes in this field to help you off.

Well, I knew that “Speech is silver, silent is gold,” but sometimes, we just cannot keep silent, especially if the negotiation can help us getting out from financial trouble!

Welcome back and today, we want to talk about the present situation of phobia and the consequences to all the people that having the phobias!

There are many recent surveys have been revealed that phobias are the most commonly diagnosed mental disorder in Western psychiatric medicine. Believe it or not, 2.5 out of 10 people that living in these present days have different types of phobias and most of them didn’t even know it until they do!

Meanwhile, many studies had indicated that between twenty and twenty-five percent of the population may be affected at any one time with non-diagnosis making the figure even higher!

Children and adults of both sexes are being affected and an untreated child may or may not carry the phobia into adult life. Some of the people will have a single phobia, while others are phobic in response to many stimuli. Beside that, age and gender are sometimes relevant with certain phobias being more common to a particular age or sex.

General population would probably agree that they have experienced phobic symptoms to a certain extent, even if only on a single occasion. As a matter of fact, there are many surveys have shown that seventy percent of people have been affected by a phobia at some stage in life and that nearly all respondents are acquainted with at least one person who will display those phobic symptoms.

Talking about the acne, I'm sure that almost everyone here has faced this situation before, especially during teenager ages. Although acne is a very common problem that happened to more than 80% of teenagers, but it's still a very embarrassed moment to most of the teenagers!

Being one of the victims of the acne, I've going through a very tough high school period, where everyday I'll hear all the teasing and sarcasm coming from all over the classroom and dining hall!

The worst thing is my acne is not the ordinary acne vulgaris, but the cystic acne that also known as nodulocystic acne. Cystic acne is a severe form of acne, where the acne will develop into many small cysts. Since the cysts can grow up to several millimeters in diameter, I was suffering a very painful moment. In addition, with all those unmerciful criticisms from my classmates, I was lacking of self-confident and don't want to go to the school or streets in a certain period!

Although I've tried much different acne treatment, but the cystic acne nightmare keeps haunting me around...

Sometimes, there is still some miracle happened on us. Thanks to Cassie, my former lovely 9th grade classmate, she was sympathy about my condition and she has introduced me the best and effective acne products.

I remembered her advice that if we want to overcome the acne problem, we should follow these basic steps:

Firstly, we should cleanse and remove all the excess oil and unclogs hair follicles with acne cleanser.

Secondly, we need to apply the acne moisturizer to help reduce skin inflammation.

Thirdly, put on some acne clarifying lotion, which it can help prevent clogged pores.

Last but not the least; remember to use the acne renewing exfoliant to promote shedding of dead skin cells and growth of new collagen!

Also, don't forget to drink at least eight glasses of water everyday to improve your skin condition. As those skins that lack of water will be ageing even faster than those that drink eight glasses of clean water regularly!

Talking about the phobias, what is your general knowledge about it? Well, most of the people have limited facts about the phobias and if you’re one of them, then you should spend a couple of minutes and read on this article…

A phobia is an anxiety disorder that have been characterized by an extremely fear or dread of certain objects, animals, events or any terror situations. Normally, a phobia can cause severe disruption and restriction of normal life activities.

The word, “Phobia” is derived from the ancient Greek phobos meaning extreme fear and flight. The ancient Greek God, Phobos, was to be known able to reduce the enemies of the Greeks to a state of terror situation and making victory in battle!

The fear is so strong that sometimes, it will produce a range of physical symptoms where it is typically may include sweating, trembling, faintness, dizziness, nausea, palpitations, hyperventilation, and even panic attack!

Most of the time, a phobia person recognizes that his or her fear is irrational and will completely out of proportion to any possible threat posed by the stimulus. Furthermore, the person might be going to great lengths to cover the existence of phobia and it’s probably that, in many cases, the disorder remains unrecognized!

According to the UNAIDS recently report, there are now over 35 million people living with HIV, including 2.8 million children! During 2007, there are 2.5 million people became infected with the HIV virus and around half of the people who become infected with HIV are killed by AIDS before they reached 35!

For those that still blurb about HIV and AIDS, then you should take a few minutes and read on the following statements…

The meaning of the acronym HIV

H is for Human, because the viruses infect humans.
I is for Immunodeficiency, because the virus attacks the body’s immune system, weakening it so that it cannot fight other deadly diseases.
V is for Virus, as this virus belongs to a group known as retroviruses.

The meaning of the acronym AIDS

A is for Acquired, which it means a person gets HIV from another infected person.
I is for Immune referring to the body’s defense system which protects the body from diseases.
D is for Deficiency, making the immune system deficient.
S is for Syndrome, which refers to a group of illnesses taking place at the same time.

HIV can be transmitted by:

Direct contact with infected blood.
