Health 2 Know - March 2009

“A few times of smile per day, keeps the doctor away!” From here, we know that smiling it’s an essential daily routine. With only a single smile, our life will become even better and beautiful.

Do you know that there is a kind of therapy named “Smile Therapy”, where the main purpose of Smile Therapy is practicing how to smile while you’re inhaling your breath! In India, there is an advancement type of smile therapy, which called “Laughter Therapy”. In the Laughter Therapy Club, all of the participants/members have to laugh as loud as they can!

Although smiling is good for our health, but some people are too afraid to smile. It is because they’re born with crooked teeth and they don’t themselves to be embarrassed. Hence, they rarely smile even they’re having the most happiness moments in their life!

Denise, my beloved cousin, was one of the former victims of the crooked teeth. She always being teased by her classmates and neighbors for having the ugly crooked teeth. To be honest, she was quite upset about this situation. She expressed all the indignant on her belongings, by crushing all the stuffs all over her room everyday!

I sensed the danger and told their parents to do something with her. However, my uncle and aunt didn’t know what to do to calm down her temper. In this case, I volunteered myself to help them. Denise have dental phobia and it’s very hard to persuade her to go to the dental clinic. However, I managed to advise her to have a dental checkup at the local dental clinic (Maybe Denise only listens to my words, as we’re both like sibling since childhood?)

During the dental checkup, the dentist, Mr. Kenneth told Denise that her crooked teeth weren’t too serious and it can be fixed by wearing dental braces on it. Denise was overjoyed when she heard what the dentist said, and she’s crying in tear of joy on the spot!

Before leaving, the dentist told Denise that it’s better for her to buy a dental insurance. The dental insurance will help the insurer protect against any unwanted teeth or gum diseases. We did take the dentist’s advice and I bought Denise a nice present (Denise’s birthday was on 18th March!): A pair of new dental braces and a set of dental insurance.

Last week, Denise has dropped me a call. She told that with the new dental braces, she’s now can smile widely and happily than ever before. I told her to be patient, as in few more years; she can take off the dental braces and having a sparkling white teeth.

We both laughed on each other through the phone…

Everyone has some very hilarious and unforgettable moments that they don’t want to forget in their life. To me, most of the bizarre and unbelievable events took place while I’m studying in college.

When I’m still a college’s freshman, I’ve been sharing the same room with Danny, my very first roommate in my college’s life! In the very beginning, he seems to be a very nice person, as he is a very polite and ambitious guy. However, after two few weeks, I started to notice that Danny is a very filthy and dirty man! Go figure, all the clothes (Including the underwear) were being scattering all over the room and the worse thing about Danny is: He didn’t go for a bath during the two whole weeks. His mainly use the cologne to cover his body’s bad smell!

After a month sharing the same room with him, I decided to write to the hostel authority and apply for the room changing. Thank goodness, as I was able to change the room within 3 days, soon after I shot out my room changing apply letter.

Although I’m not a very busybody person (Sometimes, I admit that I’m a little paranoia here! lol), but I’m also not a filthy person. I can’t hardly imagine for those people that didn’t love to bath at least once per day (Seriously, even the pigs love to be bathing with cool and refreshing water every day!)

Baths are one of the essential routine in our daily life, especially a nice and hot bath after a long working day is totally a pleasure. For those of you that enjoying spa, the health benefits of spa baths are endless.

Spa baths are to be known effective in healing aches, pains and diseases. It is also good for arthralgia, diabetes, constipation, menstrual disorder and so on.

Furthermore, for those people that have aging parents or elders in their home, you should take some precaution here, by offering them the safer showering options.

Let’s take an example, if they have hard time to take the bath, due to the arthritis or chronic legs problem, you have to install a shower wheelchair. By using the shower wheelchair, it can avoid your parents from being slipped on the wet shower floor surface. Although it might seem like a very small matter to us, but it’s a very helpful aid for the elders!

Remember one thing here, “A bath a day, keeps all the harmful germs away!”…

Beware of the Talcum Powder!

March 22nd 2009 13:32
When we’re still babies, our parents love to put the talcum powder on our body, every time after bath. Due to it’s ability resistant to moisture, it frequently being used as the baby powder, medicated powder and perfumed powder.

Do you know where talc comes from? For your information, talc is a mineral that being produced by the mining of talc rocks. Raw talc will be processed by crushing, drying and milling. Although there are many trace minerals have been eliminated during the process, but it still contain some fibers that are very similar to asbestos inside talc!

Asbestos has been known as one of the most dangerous substances, where it can cause different types of cancers, if we are being exposed onto it daily. The truth is, talc’s form is relatively closer to the carcinogen asbestos, where it has the potential to lead the users to certain types of cancers, such as ovarian and lung cancers!

Therefore, for your precaution, please say “NO” to talcum powder…

Human race is a very special living creature, as it has many different varieties than any other species. Although we might have different kind of appearances, but we all are equally the same. Why? It’s because we’re born to this lovely world, thanks to our beloved parents: Our mother and father. Without them, it’s impossible for you and me to sit around here and discussing this topic further, isn’t it?

As their descendent, we have the responsibility to take care and cheer them up. I heard and saw some of the people who didn’t want to take care their parents and sending them to the old folks home. In the end, these people also ended up with the destiny, where their children thrown them out from the home and they have to live as a beggar around the corner of street! This situation reminds me of “what goes around comes around”…

As a high school teacher, I always advised my students try to be more tolerance with their moms and dads, especially when they’re getting older. After they’ve growing up, they must try their best to spend some time to back to their hometown and visit their old parents. If they can’t back to home frequently, even a long distance phone call will make their parents happy for awhile.

Furthermore, for those who can affords to buy health insurance, remember to buy a set of health insurance for your parents as well. Although the price for older people might slightly expensive than ours, but it shows your love and concern to your parents!

If your parents are aged 65 and over, then you should consider to insure them with the Medicare, where is a social health insurance program that being administrated by the United States government. Your parents will appreciate of what you have done here.

Please remember this: Those people that didn’t respect their parents are not a good person at all, as “Have the elders at home are like having treasures!”…

Everyone has different kinds of fears and it’s a normal thing, where we shouldn’t shame of it. Let’s take an example, I’m the one that afraid of taking elevator, especially the type of close-spaced elevator. Thanks to the Claustrophobia, it’s been haunting me for over years since my childhood.

I’ve tried myself to overcome the fear, by getting medical treatments from time to time and it cost me over thousands of dollars. However, this stubborn phobia seems like a true nightmare, it won’t disappear from my life and leaving me in peace at all!

Talking about fear, my friend, Betsy who one of my best friends during high school is having her own fears as well. She’s terrify and afraid of getting old. I always told her that aging is a natural process and we cannot avoid ourselves from it. She replied me, “It’s easier for you to say here, as men are not getting old as quickly as women did!” I flabbergasted, after I heard what Betsy said…

In order to reduce the effects of aging, Betsy have tried different types of anti aging products. She told me that the best wrinkle cream that effective for preventing the wrinkles is Dermapril.

The Dermapril claimed can reduce:

• Appearance of wrinkle volume by up to 44%;
• Appearance of wrinkle density by up to 37%;

It also effective in healing the wounds or scars on your face, where Betsy face’s scar has been disappeared after using the miracle Dermapril!

Although Betsy and me do have different opinion in this anti aging topic, but I’m still very happy for her, especially she’s now look younger and vibrant than ever before.

Wish you all the best, my dear friend, Betsy!

Your Children love to doodle, but you always scolded them no to do it? Well, from now on, you should let them doodle more frequently!

According to a recent study, there are 40 members from the research panel of the Medical Research Council’s Cognition and Brain Science Unit in Cambridge has taken a test. All the participants were listened to a two and a half minute tape giving several names of people and places. They have to jot down only the names of people that want to attend to a party. During the test, 20 of the participants have to shade in shapes on a piece of paper at the same time. For your information, none of the participants was being told that it’s a memory test!

The result of the test was the doodlers were able to recall on average 7.5 names of people and places, while the non-doodlers are managed to recall on average 5.8, which is 29% lesser than the doodler.

Professor Jackie Andrade, PhD of the School of Psychology, University of Plymouth said that when we’re doing some boring job, such as listening to dull telephone conversation, we might starting to daydream during the conversation. In order to stop the daydream, we should do the doodling, as it not only can stop the daydream, but with boost up our concentration on the main task. Doodle can let the your little angels express their own thoughts and imagination, where it's good for the brain's development!

Hence, if you want your children to become smarter, then you should spend some quality “Doodling” times with them…

By the way, what can you see on the above doodle?

First of all, I must clearly mention it that Anemia has nothing to do with Insomnia. Anemia is a situation, where one person does not have enough red blood cells or hemoglobin in his/her blood.

PS: Hemoglobin is the oxygen-carrying pigment, and it can be found in red blood cells.

Iron-deficiency anemia is one of the most common types of anemia, where it could easily being treated by right diet and iron supplement.

Below here is the picture of comparison between the normal red blood cells (left) and the sickled red blood cells (right):

Pernicious anemia (My former high school Biology’s teacher has this form of anemia) is the rarest form of anemia, where the body cannot absorb enough Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) from the digestive system. When this situation happens, it can cause inadequate production of red blood cells, where Vitamin B12 is the essential nutrient to make new red blood cells. To be honest, I’ve saw my teacher fainted for several times during the class, due to this horrible anemia!

By the way, the Vitamin B12 can easily be found in eggs, fortified cereals, soy milk, milk and much more. The truth is the quantity of Vitamin B12 in fortified cereals is several times higher than fresh meats!

5 more minutes!!!

While at the park one day, a woman sat down next to a man on a bench near a playground.

“That’s my son over there,” she said, pointing to a little boy in a red sweater who was gliding down the slide.

“He’s a fine looking boy” the man said. “That’s my daughter on the bike in the white dress.”

Then, looking at his watch, he called to his daughter. “What do you say we go, Melissa?”

Melissa pleaded, “Just five more minutes, Dad. Please? Just five more minutes.”

The man nodded and Melissa continued to ride her bike to her heart’s content. Minutes passed and the father stood and called again to his daughter. “Time to go now?”

Again Melissa pleaded, “Five more minutes, Dad. Just five more minutes.”

The man smiled and said, “OK.”

“My, you certainly are a patient father,” the woman responded.

The man smiled and then said, “Her older brother Tommy was killed by a drunk driver last year while he was riding his bike near here. I never spent much time with Tommy and now I’d give anything for just five more minutes with him. I’ve vowed not to make the same mistake with Melissa.

She thinks she has five more minutes to ride her bike. The truth is, I get Five more minutes to watch her play.”

Life is all about making priorities, what are your priorities?

Give someone you love 5 more minutes of your time today!

Most people love to eat at least an apple a day. Well, if you have this habit, then you must keep doing it every day!

For your information, many researchers from all around the world have discovered that the apples are rich in pectin, where is a soluble fiber that can be used to reduce the bad “LDL” cholesterol. By only eating an apple a day, you’ll be able to reduce at least 8 to 10 percent of bad cholesterol from accumulate on your body!

Instead of the most familiar old adage, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”, there’s also an old saying in the Middle Ages, where the Englishmen always said, “Eat an apple before going to bed, make the doctor beg his bread!”. From here, we know that apples are the symbol of good health.

By the way, here is the great news for all the diabetics, as Apples are good for diabetics. Why? It’s because the soluble fiber can help to regulate blood sugar and maintain our blood sugar always situated in the idea level.

Remember one more thing here that it’s better not to peel off apples’ skin away, as most of health benefits are being derived from the skin along with the flesh!

Back to our schooling age, where we’re being told by our science or biology teachers that many animals are releasing some chemical substances as a warning signal to members of their own species, either to be prepared for runaway or fight back against the danger!

A researcher from Rice University, Denise Chen pointed out that human beings have the same reaction as the other animals did, where we’ll release some “fearful sweat” when we’re frightening or being threatened by others!

After being through very long and repeated tests, Chen claimed that human sweat contains emotional meanings and it can demonstrate many other social smells, instead of fearful sweat.

Although the “Smell of Fear” is not too strong amongst the human beings, but the sense of smell did shed us some light here. It shows that human being is also part of this miracle animal kingdom…

People have many ways to express their love and care to the ageing parents. However, sometimes maybe due to the overload working schedule, we’re very hard to spend some quality times with our family, especially with our beloved parents!

To be honest, every time when I’m looking on my parents graying hair, I started to blame myself, as I cannot find the miracle medicines to stop my parent’s aging problem (Sorry, I know I’m a little bit emotional in this case, but I just can’t control my tear from slipping off through my eyes…!).

Since I can’t help my parents to regain their youth back, that’s why I always tried my best to cheer up my parents! In every three months, I’ll go to the nearest salon and purchasing a bunch of quality hair care products. Usually, I’ll pick Sunday, as I have nothing to do but plenty of time to kill in weekend!

During the whole day, I’ll wash my parents’ head with the suitable shampoos. Since my parents have different types of hair, (My father has oil and straight hair, while my mother has dry and curly hair) I have to make sure I use the proper hair conditioning, as I don’t want their hair being spoiled by their son! Lol

After finishing the shampooing and hair conditioning processes, it’s time to color and highlight their hair. In this case, I'll use the Kerastase hair products to color and highlight my parents' hair. The even fun thing is, both of them have the same color interest: Dark brown. We all are enjoying the hair coloring and highlighting moment, as we can chitchat, and have a lot of fun gathering together in the weekend.

Some of you might think I’m a very boring guy, but hey, this is my real personality and I’m happy to do it over and over again. Remember, we won’t be here without our parents. So, no matter how busy you are, please try your best spending more times with them, even they’ll be very happy with a single call from you here…

The Pain of Having Toenail Fungus!

March 5th 2009 05:52
All of the living creatures, including human beings are always exposed to the risk of having assorted diseases. The even more sarcasm thing is, the more you’re afraid of getting the related disease, the even easier you’ll get it (Maybe fate is playing some games with us?!).

My brother, Rayno who involving in the Technical and development industry, have to work nearly 12 hours every day (To be honest, it’s quite a hard job and I’m respect his determination on his work!). During the working hours, he needs to wear safety boot, in order to prevent himself from any unexpected incidents.

For your information, most of the safety boots are normally airtight. If you wearing it over 12 hours per day, your toenails will be probably being infected with toenail fungus.

Unfortunately, my brother is one of the victims of this horrible nail disease. He’s now having the toenail fungus, or it also known as “Onychomycosis” which means the fungal infection of the nails. This disease is caused by dermatophytes (tinea unguium), where the nail plate can have a thickened or yellowish appearance. The nails can be very rough and crumble. The even worse is the nail can be easily separated from the nail bed! My brother is suffering with this stubborn disease, and as an Elder brother, I should do something to help him here...

Caution: The following picture might leave some side effects to the viewer. And, I won’t responsible for all the consequences that might occur after it! Hence, view at your own risk!

For avoiding the disease to become even worse, I’ve advised my brother to look for the toenail fungus cure. Although he refused in the very beginning, but after a few times of persuasion, he decided to have try it out.

During the toenail fungus treatment, the doctor suggested him to wash his feet at least 2 times per day with a specific antifungal soap. It wound be even better, if he can take off his safety boot and give his toenails some rest during the working period!

Furthermore, I recommended my brother to apply some Tea Tree Oil on his toenails, as it has been proven has the antimicrobial and antifungal functions. After all, it’s not too hard to find the Tea Tree Oil, as it available on the market with an affordable price.

Hopefully, he will be able to recover from the Onychomycosis disease as soon as possible. May god bless my brother!

The Nature Healer: Aloe Vera

March 2nd 2009 07:01
Aloe Vera, where it's also known as "Medicinal Aloe" is a succulent plant originated from Northern Africa. Its widely being used as the cooling and helping to heal sunburns.

Believe it or not, but the researchers discovered that It can protect the skin, moisturize, soothe stomachache and even prolong your life as well (Yeah, it sounds like a miracle long life medicine, isn't it?)

According to the archeologists, the Aloe was being used in ancient Egypt, especially the royal family for cosmetic beauty and medicinal purposes.

For your information, Aloe Vera is a cellular re-generator and has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal effects. That's why it will grow up very quickly, even you're cutting its leaves over and over again!

Beside that, it contains magnesium lactate, an itch inhibitor, in the minerals contained in the plant. Hence, Aloe Vera is effective to soothe these following problems, such as:

Insect bites,
Sunburns,
Rashes, and
Acne!

Talking about the Acne, I have a recipe for the acne and it's named "Effective Aloe Acne Mask Recipe". Here's the list of the recipe:

2 table spoon of Seaweed (Preferably in powder)
1 table spoon of Aloe Vera Gel (Any type will do)
1 table spoon of Honey (Preferably Manuka raw honey)

Just mix all the ingredients together by keep it in a container for over 10 minutes. Next, you can apply the Aloe Acne mask mixture on your face. Leave it for at least 30 minutes and rinse it with clean water. Remember to apply it everyday on your face, as "An effective aloe acne mask a day, keeps the doctor away"!
