Health 2 Know - April 2009

Honestly, I was a little bit confused when I heard about these words, “Swine Influenza”. In the very beginning, I thought it’s only one of the common influenza viruses and have no harm at all to the human beings. However, it seems that my guessing was a big mistake, when I discovered it starting to violent all over the globe…

For those who didn’t know what this “Swine influenza” is, it actually a type of influenza and it caused by the “Orthomyxoviridae family”, where is endemic to pigs. It has three different classes, which as:

1. The influenzavirus A, which is the most common;

2. The influenzavirus B (It hasn’t been found in pigs yet);
3. The infleunzavirus C (It’s the rarest type).

The above three influenza viruses share the same characteristic, which are endemic to human beings!



The H1N1 influenza virus is currently raging in the Mexico, has been reported causing 149 of death until today. The even worse thing is it to be said has been outspread to its neighboring countries, such as The United States of America, Canada, Columbia or even across the Atlantis Ocean and flight straight to the Europe!

Due to its fast outbreaks situation, the WHO director-general has been decided to raise the level of influenza pandemic alert, from the previous phase three to phase four!

Lastly, let’s pray together and hope there will be no more casualty in this horrible swine influenza…

Spirulina, isn’t this word sounds like very familiar to you here? Yep, Spirulina is the name for human and animal food supplements. It’s almost similar with the Chlorella and Blue Green Algae as well!

Do you know that Spirulina is a cyanobacteria, where is a type of microorganism has been found from 3.5 to 2.8 billion years ago (Of course, it’s hundred times older than Homo sapiens did! lol)

There are two different types of Spirulina, which as:

1. Arthrospira platensis, and

• Prevent cancer (It can release a substance named tumor necrosis factor alpha that attack tumor/cancer cells).
• Regulate and maintain diabetics’ blood sugar in an optima level.

The one more important thing here is Sprulina has been recognized as one of the branded superfoods. Hence, you should intake it regularly to keep you stay away from any form of diseases.

There are over millions of different types of living creatures on this Mother Earth planet, of course include the most intelligent human being or “homo sapiens” in scientific name! Human being is one of the most special species, where we’ve been rewarded with a powerful brain, those incredible six senses and the freedom to do whatever we love in our daily life!

However, living in this 21st century, which the foods and environment have been highly polluted, it’s a very hard task to survive. Here, I would like to remind you that it’s better to move away as soon as possible, especially if you’re currently living at the factory or mine area!

I bet you must be wondered right now, “Why I should move away, as I’m now satisfy with my living place”? Well, if you insist to your point of view, then you should spend a few minutes and read on this true story…

Angie, my former job colleague who just had a newborn cute little baby boy, Marvin, have been calling me to drop her visit a month ago. Honestly, when I saw Angie’s baby, I was a little bit overwhelming with it, as the baby Marvin is so cute and adorable. I nearly want to pinch him on his face (Ah, ah, ah, don’t even think about it, as it’s not good for newborn baby, because your hand is covering with numerous bacteria and is harmful for the baby!).

While I’m playing with little Marvin, Angie was busy cleaning up the entire house. I was a little bit curious about Angie’s behavior, and I almost misinterpret that she has “Postpartum depression” (Sorry, Angie. I know I was a little bit overreacting here, but I'm only concerned about your health!)

I walked toward to Angie and asked her to sit down, so that we can have a nice chat. Surprisingly, Angie was crying like baby, after she’d sat on the sofa. In the beginning, I was flabbergasted for seconds, and I asked her why she’s crying. I persuaded her to tell me the truth.

Angie starting to wipe all the tears away and answering my question, “Well, it’s all my fault!”
“Angie, I didn’t get it, what do you mean, “It’s all your fault” here?” I asked her patiently.

“We (It refer to Angie and her husband, Mark) supposed to move away from this seriously polluted housing area few years ago, but we didn’t do it! The living cost in this area is a far much cheaper than the other places did! Hence, we decided to set up our new life here.” Angie said it emotionally.

“Ok, but I still didn’t get it, what’s the relationship between the house and your fault, Angie!” I was confused at this moment…

“Oh, Wilson. You didn’t notice that this place is situated on the Asbestos production factory?” Angie pointed the factory that produce the asbestos products with her finger and is about four blocks away from her living place!

“Oh, now I get it, Angie. Do you mean that your health is seriously affected by the asbestos’ particles?”

“It’s not only our health, but my little Marvin also gets infected with it!” In this moment, I starting to see there’s some tears slipping down from Angie’s eyes again…

“Oh my god, I didn’t even notice that little Marvin was sick, what’s the disease?”

“I don’t know whether it’s a disease, but he seems to be having some kind of allergy, where he always had eyes’ redness and rashes on his skin!”

“Oh my god, Angie. Have you ever brought baby Marvin to the local hospital or clinic?”

“I did, Wilson. The doctors said that Marvin is having allergy, due to the unclean environment that covered with dusts and unknown particles.”

“Have the doctors gave or recommended any allergy medication to your baby?”

“No, Wilson. The doctors said the baby is still too weak to accept any allergy medication, as it main have some side effects!”

“Oh, they have told you right thing, Angie. In this case, you should follow their advice.”
“In order to keep three of us living in the better environment, I have been advised by my friend; Cathleen to clean up the house, especially the carpet, the living room and bathroom frequently will provide allergy relief!” Angie said it with a smile on her face.

“It seems you’ve found your solution here, Angie. However, if I were you, I would probably move to a new living place with better air quality!”

“Thanks for the suggestion, Wilson. For the sake of Marvin, I’m going to discuss this matter with Mark!”

“Great and don’t forget to invite me, once you’ve moving to a new place, Angie.”

“Of course, Wilson.”

In the above case, I discovered that there is nothing important to have a better living place with clean air quality. Money can buy almost anything, but it certainly cannot buy your health!

According to the latest research in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention, it suggests that all women should eating soy during their childhood.

The researchers discovered that diet could be a big influent of breast cancer in women. The studies have shown that women who consumed high amounts of soy during childhood have a greater chance of reducing the happening of breast cancer!



Believe it or not, a woman that started to consume soyduring childhood has only 28 percent of chances of getting breast cancers than those that didn’t consume any soy products.

The reasons why soy have the ability to reduce risk of breast cancer, maybe it’s due to the estrogen-like soy compounds named “isoflavonens”. These remarkable compounds have estrogenic properties that can strengthen the resistance to carcinogens and inhibit the happening of breast cancer.

For all the beloved and wise female readers, it’s still not too late to intake soy related products starting from today!

Some people might enjoy eating fruits and vegetables, while the rest of them might want to puke out, once they’re putting the veggies into their mouth!

Well, if you’re happened to be one of them that have a crush on the fruits and vegetables, especially the tomatoes, then you must keep on reading the article…

For your information, the tomato is an herbaceous and it belongs to nightshade family. Some of its close cousins are potatoes (No wonder it has the words, “-tatoes” as well), eggplants and capsicum (chili pepper).

Do you know that tomato plants are originated from South America. Believe it or not, tomato has more than 7,500 of different varieties. According to the United Nation Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) latest statistic, there are more than 140 million tons of tomatoes have been produced and consumed in year 2008!

Honestly, it’s always good to grow our own tomatoes plants, as we don’t have to worry about the possibility of the pesticides will cause some harmful side-effect to our health! However, if you unable to grow it yourself, then it’s wise to choose the finest and pesticides free tomatoes from the well-recognized tomatoes growers. After all, the organic tomatoes cost are very reasonable and we can afford to buy it!



Below here is some of the most common varieties of tomatoes, have a closer look on it:

• Beefsteak tomatoes (It’s the largest version of the tomato)
• Large tomatoes (The normal size of the tomato)
• Medium sized tomatoes
• Grape sized tomatoes
• Cocktail tomatoes (It’s the smallest version of the normal tomato)

The Tomato Jam Recipe:

Ingredients:

1. 1 pound of good ripe tomatoes (You have to core and chop it precisely!)
2. ¾ cup sugar (You’d better use the brown sugar for healthy lifestyle)
3. 1 tablespoon of limejuice
4. ½ tablespoon of fresh minced ginger
5. ½ teaspoon cumin
6. 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
7. 1/8 teaspoon cloves
8. ½ teaspoon salt

The making process:

First of all, you have to combine the ingredients into a heavy medium saucepan. Boil it over with a medium heat and stir it continuously.

Then, you should reduce the heat; stir the mixture until it has becoming a thick jam.

Lastly, place it into the refrigerator and spread it on wholemeal breads, crackers or any foods you want!

Don’t forget to enjoy the tasty tomato jam with your loved ones, friends and colleagues.

Red Alert to all Red Meat Eaters!

I read a research from the local website and found out a shocking truth about the red meat. The studies have shown that the great Aussie barbecue (BBQ) could killing you softly with its carcinogens substances!

For those that love barbecuing the red meat, you should better watch out, as it has been identified as the main causes of most cancers! Beside that, the happening rate of heart attacks is higher among the red meat eaters.



The experts advised us to eat white meat (poultry and fish) regularly than red meats, as white meat is a lot healthier and the eaters have less chance of getting cancers.

However, the experts said it’s better to change our diet into the healthier plant-based diet slowly.

I’m a very open-minded person, where I can accept many weird and bizarre things in seconds (Well, I don’t know whether it’s good or bad, but hey, this is the real me!). Due to my friendly personality, many friends and colleagues have labeled me as the “SOS lad”, where they will automatically looking for help, when they’re in deep trouble…

To be honest, I’m happy to help them to get the rid of the problems, as “A friend in need, is the friend indeed!”. That is why I always tried my best giving the useful advices to them whenever they want it!

My uncle’s neighbor, Karyn dropped me a phone call yesterday. She told me that she just undergone the lap band surgery. Frankly, I was a little bit shocked when I heard the news, as Karyn had said that surgery would be the last option for her to lose her body fat away!
Karyn confess that she was a little bit worry, as she doesn’t really know what she should eat after the lap band surgery. Ok, Karyn. Since you asked for it, then you got it!

Below here is the proper lap band diet from me to Karyn. For those that interested about it, you can have a look on it (It’s a very good guide, especially for those who just preceded the lap band surgery!)

Firstly, you can try to suck on some ice cube the day after surgery, but remember not to overdo it!

Secondly, it’s very important that in the first week, you can only eat liquidize foods, such as fruit juice, milk and vegetable soup. Also, be sure that you intake the adequate amount of water to keep your body recover even faster!

Thirdly, after a couple of weeks, you’re now can start to intake those pureed foods. Those pureed foods include mashed potatoes, yogurt or green peas!

Lastly, when you’re six months after the surgery, then you can enjoy the solid foods. However, please be sure that you must take care of the calorie intake and never try to exceed more than 1,200 calorie!

For those that using the margarine to cook, do you know that it is not the healthy lifestyle? Although margarine is good in taste, but it’s still not an ideal option to use it too frequently in your daily cooking!

Have you ever noticed that you’re putting your life in the risk everyday? Well, if you think I’m joking with you here, then just take a minute and answer the following questions!

1. Do you a smoker?
A. Nope, I hate the taste of cigarettes!

C. Of course, and I enjoyed smoking very much!

2. Do you an alcoholic?
A. Nah, I have no interest on alcohol!
B. Sort of, I only drink when my friends/colleagues force me…
C. Yeah, and it’s time for bottom up!

A. Excuse me, I’m a vegan!

A. Yep, I loved to work out all day long!

C. Are you kidding? I’d better spend my times watching Television programmes!

Ok, guys. If you answered all ‘A’ for the above questions, then I have to give you a credit here, as you’re totally have the lowest risk to getting the diabetes. For those that answered mostly ‘C’ here, oh my god, I have to cross my fingers here and praying for you a little bit more…

According to the latest survey, most of the diabetics are used to be the:

• Heavy smoker s (Yeah, smoking can really cause diabetes!)
• Heavy alcoholics
• Cannibal red meat eaters (Surveys have shown that red meat are not the good option for diabetics or normal healthy people!)

As a diabetic for over 5 years, I discovered that it’s very important to have healthy balanced diabetic diets, as if you’re neglecting this step, you might be the one who suffer from the consequences of getting seriously ill here (Believe me, as I used to be a very stubborn person and I learned from the lesson).

In the very beginning, people always told me that I cannot intake too much of foods, including those coarse grains, sugars, unsaturated fats and blah, blah, blah… I did listen to their advice, but I found I started to become weaker and weaker day after day! I noticed that it’s wasn’t a great sign at all, as I might be got myself killed if I continue what’d people told me.

As a result, I searched all over the internet with hope to find something relate with diabetic diets. Thanks to god, I found a very effective daily diet for the diabetics named “1,800 Calorie Diabetic Diet”. The special part about this method is it teaches you the proper ways to intake less than 1800 calorie per day. The 1,800 calorie diabetic diet is the optimal diet to help us control our blood sugar and maintain our health.

By the way, below here is one of my sample of 1,800 calorie menus, you can try it if you want!

a. My breakfast: Two slices of wholemeal breads with low fat margarine or 1 cups of bran cereal.
b. My lunch: One ounce of poultry or fish, two servings of vegetables and one serving of fruit.
c. My tea-time: A few piece of low fat crackers and a glass of green tea!
d. My dinner: One ounces of meat or protein, one cup of brown rice, three servings of vegetables, one serving of fruit.

People always said, “Prevention is better than cure!” Thus, if you don’t want your life being spoiled by diabetes, then you should change your daily unhealthy lifestyle as soon as possible…

Lindsay, a friend of mine, who in love with the tasty and crunchy Pistachio has complaint her frustration to me over the phone last week.

She said that she had enough with all those “Salmon” (Pardon, Lindsay. It supposed to be “Salmonella” not “Salmon”! lol) things. Go figure, from the last six months period, there are three foods have been found have the possibility of contaminated by Salmonella sp., which as:

• Raw tomatoes,
• Peanut butters, and
• Pistachios.



The more coincident thing here is all the above three foods are Lindsay’s most favorite foods! That’s why she nearly gone insane, when she heard about the contaminated Pistachios.
Well, my dear friend, Lindsay. You still have many other choices of foods, instead of the tomatoes, peanut butters and pistachios.

There is one thing we should concern here. Why the Salmonella sp. starting to outbreak like wildfire, even in the most advanced country like The United States of America? In this case, it might be caused by the Salmonella has been evolved into a more powerful species, which it has a higher and better resistance to the heat.

Scientists and bacteriologists might have to work harder to find out the solution to overcome the infection of Salmonella sp. on foods!

The Surviving Style of Salmonella!

We’ve been heard that in the past few months, there are many cases have been reported in America, where tomatoes and peanut butters have been highly infected by Salmonella. Some of you must be wondering, “How can the Salmonella survive in the tomatoes and peanut butters?”

Well, as you did, I’m also very curious about this topic too.

Hence, I’ve tried my best to study and research the living style of Salmonella. After a month of researching and data collecting, I’m now will discuss about the living style of Salmonella…

Once its succeeding, the system is going to change the structure of the cell and replicate themselves into the same form with human’s body cells. This to protect the bacteria from being spotted and eliminate by the white blood cells!

To ensure the foods are free from Salmonella, you should cook it with pressure cooker. Also, remember to wash the fruits or vegetables, before you putting it into your mouth.

Many people said that our health condition is not as strong as those in the last few decades are. To be honest, I won’t blame you if you have this kind of thought here!

According to the latest reports from the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture), there are 12 types of fruits and vegetables that being listed as “The Dirty Dozen”, which is mean, it contains many pesticides. Those 12 fruits and vegetables are:

1. Nectarines – 97.3% of Nectarines that being tested positive for pesticides!
2. Peaches – 96.7% of Peaches were positive for pesticides.
3. Apples – 94.1% tested and found positive for pesticides.
4. Celery – 94.1% tested positive.
5. Carrots – 82.3% tested positive for pesticides.
6. Capsicum – 81.5% found positive and 62.2% for multiple pesticides.
7. Kale – 53.1% tested positive for multiple pesticides.
8. Cherries.
9. Lettuce
10. Strawberries
11. Grapes
12. Pears

As you can see on the above list, most of the fruits and vegetables are full with multiple pesticides. It’s better for you to choose the organic foods. In addition, it even stunning if you can grow your very own fruits and vegetables!

However, for those that didn’t have time or space to plant their very own organic plants, you should take care of you eating habits. Keep yourself away from junk foods, as these types of food are nothing but a lot of saturated fats and high cholesterol. Get to Know ADHD Better!

For your information, Mary is one of my colleagues and she has a seven-year-old son, Brian who has been diagnosed as the ADHD patient.

You must be wondering, “What’s the heck of this ADHD?” Well, ADHD is actually a short form of “Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder” and is a neurobehavioral development disorder. It claimed to happen on 3 to 5 percent of children with several types of symptoms before seven years of age! According to the past studies, ADHD is twice as much in boys than girls.



Most of the ADHD children will have these following common symptoms:

Hyperactivity: They seem cannot even sit down for more than a minute, instead they’re hyperactive with all the climbing on things, jumping and restless sleep!

Impulsiveness: They rarely think before taking any actions and they like to interrupt other peoples’ conversations, however they didn’t do it on purpose.

Inattention: They’re easily distracted by any moving objects, always daydreaming, cannot pay focus on what you’ve taught him/her to do.

The main causes of this ADHD are unknown. Some said it causes by genetic factor while others said it might coming from the environmental factors.

For the diet, you should avoid giving them those foods that containing additives or preservatives. Some researchers discovered that Omega-3 supplementation is good to treat ADHD.
