4 Important Links Between the Physical and Mental

September 22nd 2009 13:31
Staying healthy often gains importance as we get older, even if we haven’t been focused on it earlier in our lives. And, while staying in shape is important, it’s also important to know how our mental state affects our physical state, and vice versa. The mind/body connection is powerful and it’s important to keep both in balance in order to maintain optimum mental and physical health. Consider these important points.

Exercise improves circulation, which is one of the reasons it is so good for your body. But, when the blood gets pumping, the circulation increases to the brain, as well. When blood flow to the brain is improved, cognitive awareness and alertness are improved, too.

Research has also shown that good blood flow to the brain can promote cell growth, which means that your brain may be creating new cells to replace old ones as they die out. This helps keep your mind sharp, particularly as you get older.

Exercise makes you feel better, mentally and physically. Studies have shown that those who exercise have an overall better mood than those who don’t. They also sleep better and have more energy. Exercise releases endorphins, which are the body’s natural mood enhancers and pain killers. In addition, it is believed that exercise can prevent depression, likely because regular exercisers get regular endorphin releases.

Relieving the stress in your mind decreases aches and pains. Just like physical exercise helps your mind and mood, relaxing your mind and keeping stress in check helps your body. Stress can cause many physical ailments, like headaches, sleeplessness and joint pain.

A good social network improves your health. People who have friends and socialize regularly are physically healthier. Married people live longer than single people. We are social creatures by nature, and our bodies and minds function at their best when we are surrounded by people we care about.

So, as you can see, the connection between mental health and physical health is very significant. You can make an impact on both of these by practicing some simple steps that improve the mind and body. Make sure the following things are a regular part of your life:

* Exercise - Aim for 30 minutes a day most days of the week and do something you enjoy.

* Find a stress reliever – Yoga is a great way to relieve stress and get some exercise too. But, any stress relieving technique is fine as long as it works for you.

* Socialize – Get out and spend time with your friends, or make some new ones. Join a club or take a class if you need to meet new people.

In many ways, the health of our minds and our bodies is up to us. There are many things we can do to improve our mental and physical fitness. Understanding this powerful connection between the mind and the body can help us to improve our well being by being more aware of how to take care of ourselves – both mentally and physically.
