Article extracted from OH! Health Malaysia
Previous article we were talking about the simple guidelines to maintain a healthier home. This post will be about some tips I found in how to dust those dust mites away and keep them at bay, as below:
Mattresses should be covered with plastic to stop dust mites from getting in.
Personal note: I am sure that most of us will feel uncomfortable sleeping on a plastic covered mattress, the heat stays and you feel as if your skin is chocking (even with the bed sheets on)…
- Sun-dry mattresses regularly to kill dust mites.
- Pillows should also be aired and sun-dried regularly. You can also cover it with plastic covers (I wouldn’t like that myself)
- All blankets, sheets and pillow covers should be washed and cleaned regularly in hot water. Let the washing machine run at highest speed. Do this at least twice a month.
- If you use a quilt, be sure to wash it regularly or dry-cleaned at the laundry.
- If you use interior carpeting, you need to vacuum the carpeted floors regularly to keep dust mites away.
- Do not forget to clean your air-conditioner filter every two weeks or so.
- Lift up rugs and clean the area thoroughly.
- Wash and sun rugs and carpets, or clean carpets with special carpet cleaners.

Fortunately I am not bothered by these mites, but I think I should do the vacuuming more regularly.
