The Laws of Dieting Success: Focus on food over exercise

November 14th 2006 08:00
Working out is essential to fitness and feeling good, as you will need to pump up yourself if you still want to stay healthy and active when you reach your golden age years. Yet exercising vigorously isn’t the highway to fat loss as the makers of Tae Bo would have you believe.

A study of military personnel who upped their exercise over a 3-year period found that they actually gained weight. How did this happen? Simple. They ate more than they burned off.

“People don’t understand that for every 20 minutes of aerobic exercise you do, you burn 100 calories. That doesn’t give you the liberty to eat anything you want,” says John Jakicic, Ph.D., chairman of the department of health and physical activity at the University of Pittsburgh.

If you really can’t make it for exercising for the day, don’t fret; just substitute it with a granola bar instead of having your regular tea with cookies.

So how do you overcome this?

Do a little every day
Yes, eating less is easier than trying to jog off extra calories. But that doesn’t mean you can just cancel gym and start to tie your stomach. A 2005 paper in the Journal of Applied Physiology stated that physical activity along with diet can ensure that most of your weight loss comes from fat – as much as 98% – rather than metabolism – fuelling muscle.

If you can’t have those power aerobics, try to get at least 30 minutes of moderate – intensive exercise – from walking, swimming to even climbing stairs, in most days of the week; and you are on your road to achieve a slimmer healthy figure faster.

Note:
If you have certain joint problems, ensure to consult your doctor or your personal trainer on which sort of exercise is suitable for you.

A diet and a weight lifting program has helped me lose a lot of weight (fat), and later when I changed it to a mass diet, it helped me gain muscle weight. I agree, since before I lost the weight I used to just excercise and eat whatever I could, then after I started a diet with regular weight lifting at least 3 times a weak, I lost a ton of weight. Since I'm younger this wasn't so hard for me, but anyway, nice blog, I'll check back once in a while.

Hi Been09!

Thank you so much for dropping by! ^_^

Yes, it is important to have the both combination of exercise, and it is also important to know what you eat as well. ^_^

Glad you liked this post. I will do my best to compile the rest and post it here!

Jessica,

You know I have a little joke that I amuse myself with... I can eat as much as I want if I'm prepared to up my exercise time... I find I very often loose my appetite...*chuckle*

This is a real philosophy as you get older, believe me...

You know it is true what you say about just 30 minutes a day... after I had my children I realised how little 30 minutes was in order to stay fit and feeling good about myself...

Hi Lilla!

Truly appreciate your precious comments here! ^_^

Yes, 30 minutes a day is really harder these days. But I do my best to put in that 10 minutes of workout when I wait for the water to boil on the stove.

And I also do my best to walk to work (25 minutes 1 way) at least once a week. That will truly kept the extra fat at bay. I used to walk to work everyday and now my colleagues said that I am putting on pounds ever since I had a car. LOL...
