The Laws of Dieting Success: Pump up the volume
November 23rd 2006 10:32
Hate the veggies? Disgust with fibre? You have better think it again.
It may not be glamorous, but fibre is a dieter’s best friend. Foods rich in water and fibre are bulkier, but less caloric.
A cup of strawberries, for example, has about the same calorie count as a small cookie but is far more satisfying. In one study at Pennsylvania State University, women ate the same weight of food over a 2-day period. When the women ate higher-fibre foods on the second day. They took in 30% fewer calories but didn’t feel any hungrier or less full. In another Penn State study, obese women who ate foods with higher water and fibre content lost 40 percent more weight than women who simply limited portion size and cut back on fat.
So how do you make it the most for you?
Stock up on soup and grains
Feel more satisfied on fewer calories by starting your meals with a big bowl of broth-based soup or a large green salad (heavy on the vegetables, light on fatty toppings).
Eat lots of fibre-rich, whole-grain foods like roasted bell peppers stuffed with brown rice or vegetable stew with barley. You might not really like the chewing and munching, but once you remember that every chew takes away your fat in your body, you might probably enjoy your fruits and veggies.

Hello again Jessica,
Can i just add that as the female body reaches menopausal age there are about five major changes that take place within it. One is the speed of metabolism and thyroid function, another is sugar tolerance from pancreas and insulin intolerance... big changes... there is a mountain of research to find, but one woman who has done much for older women can be found on www.massattack.com - maybe some good future articles there for you...
Portion size becomes really important and one other thing... older women should never do is eat carbs and protein together.... that is why western women are becoming so big... fast food combines both in every single take-out you order...
Girls... DON'T DO IT... keep it simple...
eat your carbs and wait four hours... then have high protein... if you have pasta... leave the cheese, if you have a cake... don't have a full milk latte... make it on water....
I don't eat bread since 2001 and I'm still alive...
Love your work here Jessica...

Learning Something Everyday
Great information about the dangers of combination of protein and carbs! This is a true discovery for me.
Well, I usually have quite a balance diet. And well, I started this odd combination of pure meat and milk for early breakfast as I am fasting 11-12 hours this week for religion purposes. But after a week, I am glad that I have lost about 500g and I think it is pretty good as I didn't do any extream exercise this week. LOL...
Thank you for reminding and I will do my best to keep the carbs and protein saparated, except perhaps, for sandwitches... I used to have rice everyday but now I have cut out rice in this round of fasting and it is pretty good. Probably I'll slowly cut the bread off, slowly.
Thank you again for dropping by! You always made my day with your priceless comments. ^_^

Interesting article. Vege are great for you.
What I do is, I topped the lettuce and tomatoe with lemon juice, instead of light topping (like thousand island) and it gives you are really fresh feeling on the vegetables. This is great when you crave for pasta. A little pasta and a lot of vegetables won't hurt you too much on the fat level.
