My Unforgettable Food Intolerance’s Experience

August 22nd 2009 18:02
Yesterday was one of the most horrific yet emergency days in my whole life…

Why? Well, it’s because I’ve to compete with time and saving my student’s life!

You must be wondered, “What’s going on?” Honestly, I was totally freaked out, when one of my students, Joanna was suffocated and fatigue in the classroom!

Luckily, I was able to send her for the treatment and she’s stable now, but need to have a good rest in the hospital. Her parent was rushed from his working place to hospital an hour afterward to visit his daughter.

Honestly, I was curious about the incident. Hence, I decided to have a detailed conversation with Joanna’s father outside the ward. Adam, Joanna’s father told me that Joanna is having the food intolerance problem since she was born.

“Food Intolerance? Is it something similar with food allergy?” I asked Adam.

“Sort of, Mr. Pon. However, it has the slightly differences among the two terms,” said Adam again.

“Oh, interesting. Mr. Lancaster, would you mind to elaborate it a little bit more?”

“Certainly, Mr. Pon. If you have time on it, I’ll tell you more about the Food Intolerance.”

We continued our chat at the hospital’s cafeteria. During the conversation, he told me that there are two different types of food allergies: The common type food allergy (Classical allergy) and the rarest type, food intolerance (Delayed onset food allergy).

The biggest differences between food allergy and food intolerance would be:

Food allergy
It causes immediate responses, usually within seconds or minutes!
Even with a very small amount of food, it still can trigger the food allergy.

It can be detected by mediating the IgE antibody reaction.

Food Intolerance
It is a very slowly process, which it might take up to hours or day before showing the chronic symptoms.
It can be recognized by measuring the IgG antibody.
Normally, it rarely life threatening, compare with the food allergy.

Adam described that in a simpler form, food intolerance is highly related to the inability of our bodies to tolerate with the foods we eat. People always misunderstood that food allergy and food intolerance are the same type, instead they’re two different forms!

In addition, food intolerance is mainly caused by the insufficient amounts of the chemicals or enzymes, which are needed to digest a certain types of foods.

Adam told me that Joanna couldn’t consume any kind of dairy products, as she didn’t have the ability to digest it. She’s highly resisted the dairy products, as she’ll have the following symptoms, such as suffocating or fatigue, if she’s mistakenly eaten it!

After about an hour of chatting, Adam said he has to back to the office. I told him not to worry, as I’ve been given a half day off by the principal, so that I can take care of Joanna. He thanked me and said, he’ll be backed as soon as possible, after he’s finished his job!

I walked into the ward and sitting beside Joanna. In that moment, she’s sleeping like a little baby. I’m feeling relief, as she’s safe from the terrible incident!

May god bless this little Missy and hope her recovery soon...
