Peppermint has been quite a popular garnish in Asian dishes, especially for hot and spicy food. Less knowing that actually peppermint is a little miracle from nature that is there not just an extra green garnish, but acting as a cooling agent for all walks of life.

Peppermint (Mentha piperita)

- Mint family -

From the general readings of peppermint, it really helps many people in many forms, in this page we first talk more about how it helps Gout and Gastric patients.

Peppermint is well known for "agent - Cool", especially it's help in digestive systems. It is actually both cooling and warming, and when it needs to improve circulation, it induces heat, allowing the body to disperses blood to the surface of the body, which causes sweating. It also plays as an astringent and decongestant action helps relieve stuffiness and congestion.

Helping Gout Patients
In obvious situation, peppermint doesn't directly helps gout patients in the dietary family, but it is often added (as essential oils) into lotions and creams, and salves to ease inflamed joints in arthritis and gout, not to mention headaches, neuralgia, sciatica and general aches and pains.

When consuming, peppermint has a soothing effect, calming anxiety and tension and relieving pain and spasm.

Helping agent for Gastric patients
Gastric patients always have the common problem that will cause bowel uneasiness and "wind" in the stomach. It also causes constipation if the patient is unable to drink enough fluid during gastric attacks.

When consuming peppermint, in some ways such as peppermint herbal tea or just peppermint water, helps to ease and release the "wind" trapped in the stomach, intestine and bowel, relaxes the bowel muscles and reduces inflammation, relieving the pain and spasms of colic.

Furthermore this herb contains tannins which help protect the gut lining from irritation and infection and make it useful for treating diarrhea, constipation, Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.

Personal Note: It is worth a try to have warm peppermint water and sip it slowly whenever Gastric patients feels uneasy and unable to eat because of "windy stomach".

If you are unsure whether you can take peppermint water, consult your doctor before you do so.
