SIT – The New Technique to Control The Birth of Insects and Diseases!
September 3rd 2009 06:31
Everyone knows that the mosquito bites is so itchy and sometimes, it can be deadly, especially if you’re infected by Malaria (Anopheles mosquitoes) or Dengue (Aedes aegypti)!
In the past, the mosquito populations are always controlled by pesticides, but it’s has been drastically changed…
Nowadays, the scientists from International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have invented a latest method, which they’re using the radiation to sterilize male mosquitoes population.
The technology is called, “Sterile insect technique” or also know as ‘SIT’ in short acronym. The scientists claimed that this SIT has the ability to control and reduce the population of anopheles mosquito.
Mark Benedict, one of the medical entomologist at the IAEA, said that SIT is more like the “birth control” for insects, where it’s to sterile the large number of male mosquitoes.
For your information, a female mosquito is only mate once in her life. This means, if her partner has been sterilized, none of the eggs she lays will be hatched! It sounds a little bit cruel, but by using this technique, it can effectively control the population of the mosquitoes.
After all, the sterilization process only takes a couple of minutes. Benedict assumed that by using the SIT technology, the number of mosquito will be greatly decrease in the near future!
