Would you skip a meal for a child?
March 30th 2007 05:07
Today I received an email from my cousin, who is a strong supporter for the World Vision in Malaysia. She adopted a child from China and has been supporting some of her financial needs so that she can at least leave a healthy life and go to normal schools.
Recently there is a Skip A Meal Campaign newsletter being circulated from friends to relatives. And this campaign will launch from 1 April – 8 April. I know that most Christians / Catholics are currently on Lent (Prayer and Fasting) for 40 days, and I encourage everyone, in every race and religion to challenge yourselves for 8 days. Fast from a meal and save that money up for charity.
World Vision emphasis on a lot of hungry children in China, but we also must be aware that there are plenty of 3rd world country out there and many children are suffering. Challenge yourself and save up that lunch money, or breakfast, or even dinner expenses, and pass it to a reliable organisation (local churches, Buddhist temples, orphanage, world organisations) that you know of that can at least help a child with his/her 1 meal.
So are you game enough to risk a little of your health from a hearty meal, and save a child? Heck, if you think it ironically that one meal skipped could actually keep you healthier (in terms on those who are not in good health terms).
There’s a wise quote I found from James Matthew Barrie, “Those who bring sunshine to the lives of others cannot keep it from themselves.”
I encourage everyone to reply or give comments on how you feel about this movement, and if anyone finds some good world organisations that you can donate to besides local outlets please feel free to post it here.
Lets make this a world time effort, instead only Malaysia’s making a difference!
“What we do for ourselves alone dies with us; what we do for others is timeless.
What I gave, I have; what I spent, I had; what I kept, I lost”
Old epitaph

I would definitely do it, but how/where do we donate our money?

If you have local organization around your area you can make a difference too. If you want to donate to World Vision (Malaysia) then I will try to check how it can be done for foreigners to donate to this organisation.
Bless you for taking this participation.

I have sent an email to World Vision (Malaysia), the organizers for this skip-a-meal campaign, and see whether you can participate or not. Otherwise, you can time yourself and then you can make a general donation to the donation page at the link below:

Thanks for that info, it would be great if Australia did this too.

Perhaps you can just make a guidance form yourself or even making a plastic piggy bank from recycle bottles and put the money in. Once you are done with the fasting period, calculate how much you have and then put the money in for donation at the Australia's World Vision site.
I think this is a great move for every single person who is able to have 3 meals a day, whichever part of the world they are. If every person does this, imagine every penny can be a mountain of donations to help the needy children. ^_^
Thank you for your support and participation
Have a blessed day

I would encourage you to take this opportunity to help a child, even an orphanage around your neighbourhood. Who knows the tiny dollars you spared for them can make a huge difference.
Those who are unable to skip a full meal, I'd like to challenge them to skip a cuppa perhaps. Do you know how much it cost for one cup of coffee from Starbucks? Or even spare a bottle of beer and give it to your nearest orphanage, or even trusted organisations to make a difference.
A wise quote I have learnt,

How about everyone converts to Islam and during Ramadhan they don't eat anything from 5am to 8pm? It will take away the capitalistic vibe and turn it into something a person will have to endure.

Well, if you want to donate without skipping a meal, this is absolutely a welcoming attitude towards helping others.
Here in Malaysia, Christians also have their 40 days prayer and fasting and during that period, they are like the Muslims, fasting in the day, only have meals before sunrise or after sunset. ^_^
This is to challenge the majority, who doesn't really even realise that there are a lot of people who are suffering around all parts of the world. Usually kids are the victims.
So, I do encourage you to encourage others to give a helping hand. As many said, "What goes around, comes around", the blessings you place upon will definitely bless you more.
Have a blessed day!

Bless you girl for re-inspiring. Do make sure that the organisations that you contacted to sponsor a child is doing the right thing.
Recently there were some bad reports about NGOs who are taking a lot more percentage than they ought to and the child (for instance) unable to get even 50% of the donor's sponsor. So do keep close contact with your organisation and make sure help is given.
Thank you so much for dropping by.
Have a blessed day ^_^

Yes, in Malaysia Christians also do full fast, but it isn't a mandatory.
Most of the pastors would be on full fast. But those who can't take it, usually they only have partial fast. There are a few types like:
Partial fast:
- Only water. Restrain from any kind of food.
- Skip a meal (usually lunch)
Daniel fast:
- Vegetarian fasting. Mostly taking fruits or fruit juice (or vegetable juice).
I believe what you were thinking was Daniel fasting.

Unfortunately I have not seen other than World Vision. As I am now situated in Malaysia, I have hooked up with a local church who has an orphanage. Usually I will donate there.
There's also a local orphanage old folks home I have in Kuala Lumpur whom me and my friends visit once a while. They usually don't want cash, I suppose they understand it can turn bitter, but we usually send food like rice and soluble food to the old people and children.
How about checking out with your local neighbourhood and see any orphanage that you can help out? If there isn't then I suppose you can enquiry more about UNICEF and World Vision.
Thank you so much for taking the effort to help out. ^_^
