Spending More Quality Times With Your Children Is a Must!

June 5th 2009 05:46
Life is a journey that full with many epic and dramas. To be honest, it isn’t easy to live up our life, as there are so much responsibility that we need to take care in daily life!

Well, let’s take an example. A person that we recognized can be a father or mother to other elders; He/she can also be a parent for their children, or uncle/aunt for their nephew/niece! The interaction between people-to-people is endless, and it shouldn’t be as well.

Living in this 21st century can be really challenging. Unlike those that living in the past, as there are many bad influences surrounding us in nowadays’ world.

According to the survey, up to 52 percent of the teenage drug addicts get involved with drugs, thanks to their so-called “best friends”! That is why, parents should always keep their eyes on their children behavior, as there are many unpredictable events might be taken place in this lunatic world.

Taking about the drug, I remembered a real story and it’s happened while I’m a volunteer social worker at a local community center (Yep, I’ve been a social worker for 9 months, soon after I graduated from the college).

Frankly, during the period, I’ve handled many cases, and believe it or not, 80 percent of the cases are related with the teenagers’ drug abuse problem (Sigh…)!

There’s a case about a young teenage girl who involved herself in the drug abuse matter. I clearly remember her name until today. Carly was only a thirteen-year-old teenage, when she was being caught red-handed using drug at her bedroom by his parents! Her parents were very pissed off and upset, they’ve decided to send her to the local community center, hopefully they can seek for some help here.

At the first time I saw Carly, I knew something wasn’t right about her. I asked the permission from her parents to allow me asking a few questions on Carly, without the supervision of her parents! They agreed with my request and decided to leave us alone in my office.

I started to ask Carly about her personal interests, her school life and her relationship with parents. At the very beginning, everything seems fine, as she’s answering my questions with gorgeous smiles. However, the situation is started turning upside down, when we’re talking about her parents!

She was crying and complaints. She said to me, “One of the main reasons why I involved in drug is to draw my parents’ attention!” Gosh, I was a little bit shocked with this statement.
“Although they’ve given me hundreds of dollars and uncountable gifts, but I don’t need these types of craps at all!” Carly said.

“All I want is the loving and caring from them, I hope they can spend more time with me than their bloody jobs!”

Carly knocked her right knuckle on the table and crying once again…

She confessed that after she started taking drug, it leads to another serious side effect, where she hated to eat the daily meals. The even worse thing is she will vomit the foods out from her throat inside the toilet! At the moment, I was thinking that Carly’s really need some attention and help from us. Maybe, an eating disorders treatment will help her gain the normal life back.

Once I’ve finished hearing Carly’s confession, I called her parents to join us discussing the solution for Carly’s problem. To be honest, Carly’s parents were totally flabbergasted, when they heard Carly’s confession and they’re feeling very guilty for not being a responsible parent!

Since Carly’s drug abuse situation is quite serious, I suggested them to go for the residential heroin detox programs. During the program, Carly’s parents should show their concern about Carly’s progression, by visiting her occasionally in the center!

Beside that, I also advised Carly’s parents to put Carly into the inpatient eating disorder treatment, as she really needs to overcome the eating disorder matter as soon as possible, before it turns into a deadly disorder!

Of course, all the treatments are going to take times. No matter what, as long as Carly didn’t give up, she will be able to regain her life back!

In the end of conversation, Carly’s parents did take my advices. Three days after the meeting session, Carly was headed into a local drug rehabilitation center. Three months later, I received a phone call from Carly. She was crying and shouting with joy over the telephone. She told me that she had successfully recovered from the drug abuse and eating disorder problems. Now, she’s ready to pursuit her life goal without any hesitation…

I’m very proud of you, Carly girl!

Honestly, it had been kept inside my heart for several years. However, I decided to spite it out and share it with my readers.

So, for those people that already a parent, you should spend more time with your children, where it is essential routine and you have no excuses to skip it, no matter how busy you're with your job!

A well done post Wilson!

These cases are real in every corner of the world at this very instance.

I remembered my friend sent me a short clip of one of the "No arms, no legs, no worries" seminar footage where this was started in Australia, he is a motivational speaker with no arms and no legs and he also pointed out the eating disorder issues to the students in school and encouraged them and a lot more.

There is also an old movie made by Singaporeans pointed out the issues of busy wealthy parents often neglected their children with scolding and money, that leads kids to drug abuse, violence and drop off schools - with a fictional story of 2 families, 1 teacher, 1 headmaster and the "rotten apple metaphor" very interesting, unfortunately I didn't managed to catch the title of the movie. Perhaps I'll try to Google it up.

Thanks Jessicca for the good and meaningful words...

Oh, about the Singaporeans' movie, I think you're talking about the "I Not Stupid Too", isn't it? I was very touching with the scene, where Jack Neo, the father also the producer of the movie begging on his knee in front of the old nanny...

Remember that "What comes around goes around"! If we always neglected our children, then you've to prepare for the worse things that might be happened on your life...

You know what? I was thinking...if all parents will be vigilant enough to guide their children, what a great world this would be! But now, we see children being involved in crimes, drug abuse, etc...And there's the internet where they learn pornography and stuffs like that...the parents have to gain great knowledge in rearing their children before planning to have one.

Yeah, Physio. It would be an Utopia as Micheal Moore said, if the world is full with only good things!

Unfortunately, this is only a fantasy and never going to come true...
