STD – Something everyone must be aware of

July 20th 2007 01:05

Previous week when I attended a counselling training course we talked about client and counsellor’s “border” in the sense of why women counsellors only take female patients and likewise for men counsellors that only takes in male patients. It leads to the problems of affair (which often leads to intimacy) and the lecturer briefly touched about the subject of intercourse and STD.

He mentioned that why STD often occurs especially an individual have multiple partners, is because that whenever intercourse is present, bodily fluids are exchanged and the partner’s bodily fluids actually stays in the individual’s body for a long period of time. I can’t remember exactly how long, but it is long enough to transmit to the next partner. So even a one-night-stand can bring fatal.

That’s why the Bible said, “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh” (Matthew 19:5 NIV); because you are carrying each other’s bodily fluids in you.

That brings me to questions about STDs and I realised that there are a lot of kinds of STD out there that I myself aren’t aware of. Therefore I will try to list down a series of STD / STI that is out there for every one to know more about.

First of all, what is STD?
A sexually transmitted disease (STD) is an illness caused by an infectious pathogen that has a significant probability of transmission between humans by means of sexual contact, including vaginal intercourse, oral sex, and anal sex. Increasingly, the term sexually transmitted infection (STI) is used, as it has a broader range of meaning; a person may be infected, and may potentially infect others, without showing signs of disease. In addition, "disease" seems to have much more of a negative connotation than "infection." Some STIs can also be transmitted via the needles used in IV drug use, as well as through childbirth or breastfeeding. Sexually transmitted diseases have been well known for hundreds of years. Until the 1990s, such afflictions were commonly known as venereal diseases: Veneris is the Latin genitive (possessive) from of the name Venus, the Roman goddess of love. Social disease was another euphemism. Public health officials originally introduced the term sexually transmitted disease, which clinicians are increasingly using alongside the term sexually transmitted infection in order to distinguish it from the former. (wikipedia)

Specifically, the term STD refers only to infections that are causing symptoms. Because most of the time people do not know that they are infected with an STD until they start showing symptoms of disease, most people use the term STD, even though the term STI is also appropriate in many cases.

Do many people get STD's?
Every year, millions of people get a sexually transmitted disease (STD). There are over 25 kinds of STD’s. You are vulnerable to STD’s at any age and at any time. You can have an STD and have no symptoms for weeks, months and possibly years, yet still be passing it onto your sexual partners. Every year more that 19.1 million Americans contract a new STD infection. One out of every two sexually active single persons will get an STD by the age of 25. (Pregnancy Center East)

Next I will be listing the common STDs available these days. Do stay tuned.
