Swine Flu

July 24th 2009 06:16
Swine flu is the newest strain of influenza A virus also known as H1N1 virus. More than 70 countries are now reporting cases of human infection with swine flu. The World Health Organization has raised the worldwide pandemic alert level to Phase 6, which is quite an alarming fact. People who work closely with pigs are at an increased risk of catching swine flu.

Swine flu symptoms in humans are similar to those of influenza. The most common symptoms of swine flu in humans are chills, fever, sore throat, muscle pain, headache, coughing, tiredness and feeling of sickness.

Various swine flu treatment options
Prevention is the best treatment to avoid swine flu. So wash your hands with disinfectant regularly and avoid contact with people suffering from swine flu or who work closely with pigs. If however, you catch the virus or are exposed to a person who has caught the virus, anti-viral drugs can help you out.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends the use of Tamiflu (oseltamivir) or Relenza (zanamivir) for the treatment and/or prevention of infection with swine influenza viruses.

Zanamivir and oseltamivir are both known as neuraminidase inhibitors. They both help prevent influenza A and influenza B viruses from growing in the body by inhibiting the production and release of virus from cells. This slows the spread of the infection in the respiratory organs such as airways and lungs.

Tamiflu comes in a pill form and is to be taken orally for 5 days. Zanamivir is inhaled through a device called a Diskhaler. This inhaler device delivers the medicine to the lungs, where the swine flu virus multiplies. This method of taking Relenza zanavir is very inconvenient and immeasurable; therefore, most people prefer to buy Tamiflu.

A placebo-controlled study of oseltamivir showed that if Tamiflu was taken within 36 hours of witnessing first flu symptoms, it reduced the length of illness by 30%, the severity by 40%, and the time to resume normal activities by 2 or 3 days.

If you think you have the swine flu or it has been spreading in your country/community, consult a doctor and find out if you can take Tamiflu or not.

Sadly, the death toll is increasing, hospitals are finding it hard to cope, good places to stay away from at present, but for those seriously affected by swine flu, an essential.

According to the latest survey from New Zealand, 79 percent of the citizen might have the risk to getting infected by A H1N1! It's totally a horrible situation...
