The Abnormal Tau Protein Behavior is one of The Causes of Alzheimer’s Disease!

September 3rd 2009 18:38
Human’s body is a very complicated part. As a biology teacher for years, I’m still very confuse about the function of various types of proteins in our body!

Well, according to the latest study, the transmission of abnormal Tau proteins, which forming tangles in cells is to be known as one of the main reasons of how Alzheimer’s spreads throughout a patient’s brain!

For your information, Tau protein is microtubule-associated protein. It’s mostly abundant in neurons in the Central Nervous System (CNS). The main purpose of Tau protein is to interact with tubulin to stabilize microtubules and promote tubulin assembly into microtubules. Tau protein controls microtubule stability in two different forms: Isoforms and phosphorylation.

Normally, the tau protein is very important, as it manages the transport of materials within brain and other cells through the myelin sheaths. Once it spotted something suspicious or irrelevant, it stops the information sending process automatically. However, in Alzheimer’s disease, the tau proteins started to perform uncommon reaction, where it transmitting the information to the brain simultaneously, regardless of its validity!

Once the above problem happening, it causes the brain overloading with information and might lead to inflammation, clumps or tangles, which kill most of the brain cells!

The researchers are trying their best to figure out what forms of the tau protein spread the Alzheimer’s disease and the cures for overcoming the problem!

Let us cross our fingers and hope the scientists will find the solution as soon as possible…

This condition shows it is on the increase with an increasingly ageing population, so spreading the word and the research going on is in everyone's interest, well done, Wilson.

Katyzzz, me and you can make a great team on the Alzheimer's disease research, isn't it?
